The case of four men, who have been in custody since their arrest in July 2012 for murder, was yet again delayed in order to facilitate interviews between the accused men and their attorneys.
This was the first case that was mentioned at the opening sitting of the Michaelmas session of the St. Ann Circuit Court on Monday, October 12.
Charged for murder are: Mark Brown, Eric Ramjeet, Lorenzo McDonald and Kevin Bailey, who are all of Hampstead in Runaway Bay, St. Ann. They are all charged for the murder of a Jamaican, 35-year-old Gavin Campbell, who lived in Orlando in Florida, but was visiting the island when he was killed. Campbell was killed on July 5, 2012 after the accused men reportedly invaded the villa where he and several of his overseas relatives were staying. The group was on the island for a family reunion.
When the matter was mentioned on Monday, a new lawyer was assigned to represent one of the accused, Eric Ramjeet. He was Kristoipher Nathan. Attorney Oswest Senior Smith no longer represents the accused man. The other accused, Mark Brown is represented by Linton Gordon, who had Obika Gordon holding in his absence. Both accused men Lorenzo McDonald and Kevin Bailey are represented by attorney Robert Brown.
Also in court on Monday, attorney Robert Brown also told presiding high court judge, Justice Lloyd Hibbert that he was experiencing difficulties interviewing his clients as he explained that the men were being held in Kingston. He also made mention of “the horrific experience that attorney Linton Gordon had when he went to interview his client.” This was a similar issue that was also mentioned when the matter was last before the circuit court on Thursday, June 11.
Mr Justice Hibbert asked police personnel present if the men could be placed somewhere for an hour before being transported back to Kingston in order for the attorneys to conduct interviews with their client. This was agreed to.
The four accused men, Mark Brown, Eric Ramjeet, Lorenzo McDonald and Kevin Bailey are to return to court on October 20 when the matter is again to be mentioned.
