The police are continuing their probe into two murders that occurred in St Mary last week.

The two men, who were shot dead in separate incidents, became the first two murders recorded in the parish for 2017.

Dead are 49-year-old Steve Barnett of Portland and 45-year-old Dennis Davis of Boscobel, St Mary.

In the first incident, on Tuesday, January 24, at about 12:20 a.m., officers attached to the Annotto Bay police were on patrol, when they saw a man lying on the main road.

The man, later identified as Steve Barnett, had what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

The officers assisted Barnett to the hospital, but he died at about 1:15 a.m., while undergoing treatment.

Deputy superintendent (DSP) Lorraine Elliston of the St Mary police explained on Monday that the police are continuing with their investigations into the matter.

She explained that no arrest has been made.

Asked if a motive had been established, she said that it may have been domestic related, but she did not give details as the police were probing the incident.

SILENCE ON KILLING OF SHOPKEEPER

The St Mary police next had to respond to another murder, last Tuesday, this time in the Boscobel community.

The shooting death of shopkeeper, Dennis Davis may also have been domestic related. However, the police say that they are investigating the matter and statements have been collected.

However, family members and friends of Davis were unwilling to speak openly about the murder and circumstances surrounding it.

Reports are residents of the area heard gunshots sometime after midnight last Tuesday.

The police were not alerted until sometime after 7 a.m. to a two-storey house in Boscobel. Barnett’s body was later found with gunshot wounds by the police.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

There are unconfirmed reports that other family members were at home, but it not clear if they had heard the gunshots.

Some have also said that Davis’ murder may have been domestic related.

When The Times visited the scene hours after the murder, Davis’ daughter said that she did not wish to speak about the death of her father.

Other community members spoke in their groups, but did not wish to speak about the murder of one of their own community members, who operated a shop in the area, close to where he was murdered.

Some of Davis’ friends, who spoke on the basis of their identities being withheld, said he was a good man.

Davis had been living in Boscobel for some ten years.

One of his friends said he had seen him in another section of the community on Monday night and there was no indication that anything was wrong with him.

Deputy superintendent Lorraine Elliston on Monday said that statements have been collected in the matter and police are investigating the incident.

Anyone having any information on the any of the two murders committed last week in the parish is being asked to contact 119 or 994-2452. Persons can also contact the nearest police station.
