It now appears that as many as eight people were shot, two fatally, at the JLP rally at Sam Sharpe Square last night.
Police early this morning confirmed the shooting death of two persons and the injury of three others at a JLP mass rally held in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego St. James on Sunday February 7.
Police say they have no evidence that the shooting was politically motivated.
One of the persons killed has been identified as 22-year-old Javin Campbell otherwise called ‘Javinci’, who police said “is known to the police as a member of a gang that operates in the Flanker community of St. James.” The other man slain has not yet been identified.
However, since then reports are that at least six other people have turned up at hospital saying they were shot in incident at Sam Sharpe Square.
The police report this morning said: “According to initial reports from the St. James Police, the shooting incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. during the JLP mass meeting, following a dispute between persons who were in attendance at the mass rally. At the end of the shooting two men were dead while three others received gunshot injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The shooting was contained within the area where the dispute occurred and no shots were fired in the direction of the podium where the opposition leader was speaking at the time of the incident.
“The police have launched an investigation in the matter and will provide further details.”
