TRAFFIC LIGHTS TURNED ON IN DISCOVERY BAY

BUSY, DANGEROUS INTERSECTION GETS LIGHTS AFTER YEARS OF REQUESTS

Discovery Bay, St Ann; April 4, 2025

The main intersection in Discovery Bay, St Ann, on the North Coast Highway, is now regulated by traffic lights.

The lights were switched on just before mid-day, Friday, April 4, 2025, by Member of Parliament for North West St Ann, Krystal Lee.

The lights are at the main intersection on the main road across from Puerto Seco Beach and a road running between the Total Station and what is now a taxi park. There are marked and signalled pedestrian crossings close to the intersection.

The community has been complaining for years that the intersection was the scene of fatal crashes as well as near misses and collisions

resulting in injuries.

The project cost is $16.5 million and was underwritten by the Ministry of Economic Growth.

Manager of Communications and Customer Service at the National Works Agency (NWA) Stephen Shaw said the contract was signed last year to have the intersection equipped with traffic lights. He said that given the many demands the NWA had for traffic lights, Discovery Bay was “fortunate” it was granted the lights that were being turned on.

Mr Shaw chaired the brief meeting, next to Puerto Seco Beach, ahead of the commissioning of the lights.

Councillor for the area, Carlton Ricketts said the need for the lights was an overwhelming one for the Discovery Bay community for years. He said he was happy that the lights were finally being turned on.

MP Krystal Lee thanked the community for their advocacy. She said the lights were only one of the needs on which she had been making representation for Discovery Bay.

President of the Discovery Bay Community Development Council (CDC) Sheryl King said it was a “historic day” for Discovery Bay and would help bring order and safety to the community.
