Tax payment and bad roads were among the main items of discussion for the evening at the St Ann Chamber of Commerce members’ meeting at the John McDowell Conference Center.Monica Walker, tax specialist of the Tax Administration of Jamaica (TAJ), engaged the members of The St. Ann Chamber of commerce on Wednesday, September 17, in an informative presentation on the new tax policies implemented and what is expected of taxpayers. Marino Maffesanti mentioned that a survey had been done and it has proven that of all business owners, only 70 percent were paying taxes, therefore the other 30 percent were unknown. “As a result of that, it’s putting a burden on us tax payers and the government of Jamaica needs to do something about it,” he said. The attention of Senior Superintendent Yvonne Martin-Daley, who represented the Area 2 police at the meeting, was drawn to complaints about the deteriorating state of the Bread Nut Hill road. It was stated that residents were furious that trucks contracted to the highway works project were using the community road and causing major deterioration of it. It is said that the residents had reported the matter to the police on numerous occasions, without any action by police. The residents urge that something must be done about it or they will take matters into their own hands.Chairman of the St Ann Parish Council, Mayor of St Ann’s Desmond Gilmore, spoke about the plans for and concerns about the resort Town of Ocho Rios. He said the opening of the North-South leg of Highway 2000 should have significant impact on Ocho Rios.
