Suspected robber shot dead by police

There are conflicting reports on how a man was fatally shot and another wounded during a confrontation with the police in St. Mary on Sunday, June 4.

Dead is 40-year-old Andrew Hunter, otherwise called ‘Buju’, of Coney Island, Annotto Bay in the parish.

The second man was treated at hospital and released into police custody.

Both are suspected to have been among four robbers who held up a Chinese-run supermarket, along Main Street in Annotto Bay on Sunday afternoon.

The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) in a release did not give details of a robbery at the supermarket, but stated that “one man was fatally shot and another wounded during a confrontation with the Police in an area known as Coney Island in Annotto Bay, St. Mary on Sunday, June 4.”

The report further stated that: “Dead is 40-year-old Andrew Hunter, otherwise called ‘Buju’, of Coney Island, Annotto Bay, St. Mary. The second man was treated at hospital and released in police custody.”

The release indicated further that “one .45 pistol with a magazine containing three .45 rounds of ammunition was seized during the incident.”

The report ends by stating that: “The matter was reported to the Inspectorate of Constabulary (IOC) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).”

A ROBBERY

Information to The Times is that Hunter was one of four men, who allegedly robbed a supermarket in Annotto Bay and was fatally shot by police officers during a shoot-out.

A second alleged robber is under police guard in hospital after turning up at the medical facility with gunshot wounds.

Reports suggest that at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, four armed men robbed the supermarket, along Main Street in Annotto Bay.

The police were called, and officers who responded went in pursuit of the alleged robbers.

Further reports are that the cops approached four men, along a train line, and a shoot-out ensued. One of the men was hit, while the other three fled the area.

The wounded man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said a firearm was retrieved from him.

Sometime later, a man turned up at the Annotto Bay Hospital, suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

He was later hospitalized under police guard.
