Mayor of  St Ann’s Bay and chairman of the St. Ann Parish Council, Desmond Gilmore, has reiterated an earlier commitment to do all in his power to help with the growth and development of students at Steer Town Academy.Speaking at a handing over ceremony of musical items to the school last Tuesday, February 4, Mayor Gilmore said he was committed to the development of the school and he wants the students there to excel in all areas.“Outside of it being in my division (Lime Hall Division) I made a commitment from very early that I would endeavor to do all in my  power to empower and to encourage the school and to help to build this school, to help build the reputation of this school and to empower the children,” he told the gathering at the handing over ceremony. The mayor handed over two flutes, two trombones, two clarinets, two brass drums, four trumpets, four saxophones and 10 snare drums to the school’s musical department. He expressed optimism that the items would significantly boost the music programme at the school.“I am hoping that with the presentation of these instruments this afternoon, it will open some more doors and motivate students to now come forward and show exactly what they are made of,” he said.Mr. Gilmore said the donation was made possible through Food for the Poor and St Ann based non-profitable organization, Thread Foundation. He said the instruments cost about $650,000 and that while their true value cannot be quantified, he hoped the donation will go a far way in promoting the school as an institution, help the students to grow individually and span the bridge, if there is any, between the school and the community.
