St Mary teen footballer fatally stabbed in ‘prank’ gone wrong

A prank by teen boys to frighten one of their friends has resulted in the death of one of the boys on Thursday, August 31.

Dead is 15-year-old Rushawn Duncan of Cricket River in Annotto Bay, St Mary.

The police have said the teenager’s death was accidental and foul play is not suspected at this time.

Duncan was a talented young footballer, who was a member of the 2017 national Under-15 Boys football training squad.

Reports are that sometime at about 9:15 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was on his way home in the Annotto Bay area.

A number of friends of the 16-year-old, including Duncan, who knew that he was on route decided to hide in bushes and play a prank on him.

The 16 year-old-boy reportedly had a knife in his hand, and when he got to the location of the friends, they reportedly jumped from the bushes.

Duncan was then stabbed in the chest.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police say that the 16-year-old boy is to be questioned. Following their investigations, a file will be completed and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a ruling on the case.

The Jamaica Football Federation has expressed shock at the untimely passing of Rushawn Duncan.

The JFF in a release said Rushawn represented the country as part of the Under-15 squad which played practice games in the Cayman Islands in preparation for the CONCACAF Under-15 Boys Championship.

“Rushawn had a bright future in football…he played right defence or centre back and always gave his full attention to the team,” said national Under-15 coach Aaron Lawrence.

The tragic death of Rushawn comes on the heels the killing of three men in the Annotto Bay community over a week ago.
