Seniors turned the Three Hills Community Centre and sports ground, St Mary into a place of fun and competitive sporting events on Thursday, May 1. It was the annual St Mary Seniors Sports Day, put on by the National Council for senior Citizens in the Ministry of Social Security. Nearly a dozen senior citizens clubs took part in the day’s events that included a number of flat walking and running races as well as those with obstacles including, potato race and egg and spoon. At the end of the day, Three Hills emerged the top club, followed by Emmanuel in second with Bromley, placing third. A team led by Simone Granston of the St Mary branch Social Security Ministry, coordinated the day’s events with support from the Social Development Commission (SDC) whose parish manager Travis Graham acted as emcee for the sporting events. She says the main aim was to keep seniors active and physically fit and involved in physical activity. Those events included several on the track items, with participants divided into five-year age cohorts, such as people in the 60-64 age group, 65 -69 age group and so on. Seniors even over 70 years old also took to the track. But for others it was simply playing fun table games, including dominoes. Others assisted in the kitchen and yet others sold their own fruit and food. Among the top sponsors were Sociabank and Charob Supermarket, Highgate.
