St Mary police set out strategy to reduce domestic violence

The St Mary police are seeking to tackle domestic violence which accounted for nearly two of three of every five murders in the parish in 2015.
Head of Police for St. Mary superintendent Stephanie Lindsay says domestic violence accounted for 59% or 17 of the 29 murders in the parish for the year 2015.
She gave this figure while speaking at a press conference on Thursday, January 7 at the Area Two headquarters in Tower Isle, St. Mary.
As a result the police have started to take a greater look at reports of threats as well as incidents relating to domestic violence.
The superintendent said police have moved to follow up on threats reported and to seek also to engage the parties involved in mediation.
She said a police officer has been assigned at every station to follow up on reports of threats, understanding that often complainants do not want to follow through with the matters to court. She said people are failing to resolve their domestic disputes and these often end in violence, including murder with the gun.
