The shooting death of Lovelace follows what police said was a chase of a vehicle they had ordered to stop.

However, residents of Islington where the incident unfolded told the North Coast Times that those involved were not involved in any crime, had no gun, and were returning from a party.

The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) is reportedly probing the incident.

The Times was unable to get the INDECOM report, despite contact with the agency, on the incident Monday morning, September 9.

Police said four people were in custody in connection with the incident.

According to police, the events unfolded

on Saturday,  September 7, in Nutsfield, Islington, St Mary.

Police said that around  2:45 am a team from the Operation Support Team (OST) were on patrol and were heading from Annotto Bay to Port Maria when they saw a silver Toyota Axio motor car travelling in the opposite direction at high speed.

The driver disobeyed their signal to stop.

The vehicle was chased and crashed into a yard on the Nutsfield main road.

Police said three men alighted from the vehicle and opened fire at the police who returned fire. The men ran in nearby bushes.

Lovelace was later found suffering from gunshot wounds to his back and side. He was taken to the Annotto Bay hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said ten spent casing and a mobile phone were recovered from the scene.
