The St Mary High School Cadet Unit’s Drum Corps has received a donation of more than one million dollars worth of equipment.

The items include a ceremonial mace, two bass drums, tenor drums, B flat flutes and cymbals.

A group of past cadets at St Mary High School used the Go Fund Me Platform and raised US$7,677 (or the equivalent of J$1.15 Million) to help fill a need for the Drum Corps.

The instruments were presented at a ceremony at the school on Thursday, June 8. Mario Thomas, a former Sergeant in the Cadet made the presentation to Principal Jullett Frazer Sadr and current Drum Major Staff Sergeant Antwone Elphic.

Remarks were made by Adrian Palmer, former Head Boy (2011-2012) and also former Company Sergeant Major of the St Mary High Cadets. He explained how the initiative started and how the need came across to the former students.

The school’s Cadet Unit is well known for its discipline and excellence and was recently awarded by Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, St Mary for outstanding contribution to the parish.

The Drum Corps serves the school at various functions and also appears and performs at several parish events. They also serve the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force.

In an interview with the North Coast Times, Mr Palmer said it was necessary to ensure they can represent well at the many events they are called to attend.
