St. John’s Preparatory School Career Day 2016

It was an awesome and exciting day as the St. John’s Preparatory School on Thursday, May 5, held its Career Day.

The school grounds were transformed into a world with young professionals from grades one to six dressed in outfits depicting their preferred career paths.

The day’s event was organized by: Charmaine Lynch, grade three teacher and main organizer; Issia McFarlane, grade one teacher and Hope Dawkins, grade six teacher.

In an interview with The Times, one of the organizers Ms Dawkins explained the reason for the Career Day being staged at the school. “Career awareness plays a significant role in helping students to select different careers and as a result of that we are bringing from this level the importance of setting goals and trying to achieve these goals in order to get substantial jobs later in life,” she explained.

Several professionals from various fields were invited to share in the day’s activities, by introducing the children to their careers. These included the JDF, the police, doctor, lawyer, opticians, barber, and the staff of Moon Palace Jamaica Grande.

The members of the Jamaica Defense Force demonstrated to the children various life skills when on the road and also educated them on the equipment used in their line of work.

The chefs from Moon Palace Jamaica Grande caught the attention of the children with their demonstrations of the carving of a watermelon into a flower, along with the mouthwatering goodies that they brought for them.

Meanwhile, students were treated to massages from masseuses from the hotel.

The children also participated in the day’s event by performing for the specially invited guests at the Career Day.

The parents ensured that all the students were attired in their various career outfits, including as doctors, lawyers, firemen, soldiers, nurses, an actress, pilots, the U.S. marine and even a little girl representing the leader of opposition, Portia Simpson-Miller.DSCN3229 DSCN3214 DSCN3226
