ST ANN’S BAY, St Ann, Sept. 25, 2024
Improvements are to be made to the St Ann’s Bay market which remains largely empty including on weekend market days.

Vendors have taken to the street adjacent to the market and have also set out their wares on Main Street, causing congestion and reducing the use of the sidewalks and creating a sense of disorder in the capital.
The announcement of work to be done was made by Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie during a tour of the facility on Tuesday, September 24. He was accompanied by officials of the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC).
Mr McKenzie said he was disappointed with the state of the market. He said work would be done on the bathroom facilities.

He said this had come following allocation of funds for work on the Brown’s Town and Ocho Rios markets. “Fifteen million dollars will be made available to commence emergency work [in St Ann’s Bay], especially on the sidewalk which poses some real issues,” Mr McKenzie said.
Two vendors who approached the Minister during the tour pointed to the poor state of the market and even to a section of the sidewalk that had remained unrepaired for years.

Also on tour with Mr McKenzie were Chairman of the SAMC, Mayor of St Ann’s Bay Michael Belnavis; Councillor for St Ann’s Bay Dalas Dickenson and CEO of the SAMC Jennifer Brown-Cunningham, and other officers.
