PNP To Make Decision In Days As Bell Waits
The People’s National Party (PNP) is expected in a matter of days to indicate how it will go about deciding on who will represent the Party in Portland East.
Reports swirling indicate that former Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) President Owen Speid is in line to get the nod to be the PNP’s standard bearer in the next General Elections. Speid, a Portlander and former student at Titchfield High told a radio station Thursday y that he has applied to become a member of the PNP and to seek to represent the Party in that seat. Speid is now teaching abroad.
For several months now, many in Portland East have been assuming that Colin Bell will be formally named as Constituency Caretaker. Bell has been on the frontline for the party; recently drawing an outburst from Everard Warmington and being at the forefront of supporting constituents protesting over water and the state of the roads.
However, reports are that a PNP-commissioned poll indicates that Mr Bell would not beat MP Ann Marie Vaz in a head-to-head contest. Hence, the party is looking for another candidate.
North Coast Times could not confirm that Rev Percival Jackson who lost to Mrs Vaz in the 2020 General Election is again indicating an interest.
Asked to respond to the reported developments, Mr Bell told the North Coast Times that he would wait on the Party. “I am waiting on an announcement of the Party” he said.
