Speeding may have been one of the factors responsible for a crash that claimed the life of a security guard in Boscobel, St Mary on Monday morning, April 24.
Several other persons, including school children, were injured in the motor vehicle collision along the Boscobel main raid in the vicinity of the Ian Fleming International Airport.
Dead is 33-year-old Patrick Wallace, of Warner Street in Port Maria, St Mary.
Reports to The Times are that Wallace is a security officer.
In a release, the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) stated that: “Reports from the Oracabessa Police are that about 7:10 a.m., Wallace was driving his motorcar along the Boscobel Main Road, heading towards Ocho Rios, when he allegedly collided with a Toyota Fielder motor car travelling in the opposite direction. He sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
However, reports to The Times suggest that there was a race between two motorcars on the Boscobel main road. Police have validated that report.
Local police sources say that a motorcar said to be a Toyota Fielder, driven by Wallace and a Honda motorcar were racing on the road.
The motorcar driven by Wallace reportedly overtook the Honda motorcar and collided into an oncoming taxi, which was another Toyota Fielder motorcar.
Wallace had to be cut from the vehicle by personnel from the fire department. Persons say he died on the scene and his body was covered.
It is understood that six other persons were rushed to the hospital, where one remains in critical condition.
Among the injured were school children from the Oracabessa Primary School. However, their injuries were not life threatening.
The police are continuing their investigations.
