SAMUDA SAYS THANKS FOR VICTORY

LOW POLL NUMBERS WERE EXPECTED

The final vote count is taking place today, Tuesday, October 1, following the victory of the Jamaica Labour Party’s Matthew Samuda at the polls in the North East St Ann constituency.

The election was to replace Marsha Smith who resigned as MP  September 3, 2024.

According to data from the Electoral Office of Jamaica EOJ  the voter turnout was 11.6 percent or just over 5,000 voters from the more than 43,000 on the list cast their ballots.

Based on the preliminary count: David Anderson, Independent received 222 votes, Chase Neil of the United Independents Congress (UIC) received 30 votes, and Matthew Samuda of the JLP got 4,838.

On Monday night’s celebration of his victory, at the Constituency headquarters in St Ann’s Bay, Mr Samuda thanked the people for supporting him. He congratulated Labourites and thanked them for trusting him. He said the turnout was expected to be low. Listing in details some areas of dissatisfaction or identified areas of need among constituents, Mr Samuda said the work to improve infrastructure including roads and water systems would commence soon.

The Returning Officer commenced the final counting of the ballots on Tuesday morning.
