Some residents of Richmond and nearby communities say they hope the fire that burnt down a section of main street in the town will provide opportunity for rehabilitation.
On Sunday evening, fire started in an old building housing a shop, near the Richmond Post Office. The fire quickly spread to an adjoining wood and concrete structure before it was put out by two fire units — one from Annotto Bay and the other from Port Maria.
No one was injured and three businesses are said to have suffered loss. However, even while the fire raged people were heard saying the buildings needed to be removed and Richmond given a new look.
The town has been in decline for decades since the cessation of rail service and move of some businesses to nearby Highgate.
