DEVOUT CHRISTIAN CREATED POLITICAL UPSET IN ST ANN NW
April 22, 2024, Brown’s Town
Several tributes have been paid to the late Princess Lawes, former Member of Parliament for North West St Ann.
She died Friday, April 19, 2024, at age 79.
A devout Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), Miss Lawes served the Church for years in various capacities in the Jamaica Union Conference.
In 1980 she created a huge political upset when she defeated high-profile PNP MP Arnold ‘Scree’ Bertram to take the North West St Ann seat for the JLP. She served in the Edward Seaga-led administration as Junior Minister. Before the 1980 elections, she was a Senator for the JLP.
The Jamaica Union Conference recognized her work in politics and the nation and her service to the Church.
In his tribute, JLP Leader Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “Her passing marks the end of an era, not only for the Jamaica Union Conference [of Seventh Day Adventists] but for our nation as a whole.”
Mr Holness described as “invaluable” her contributions as a Member of Parliament, Junior Minister and Senator.
And the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) also paid tribute to Ms Lawes.
In a release, the PNP said: “It is with profound sadness that we learnt of the passing of former Member of Parliament for North West St Ann, Princess Lawes.”
The PNP said, “Throughout her career, Princess Lawes exemplified compassion and unwavering dedication to the people she served. Her advocacy for women, children, and the marginalised, resonated deeply with many.”
