National clean up day activities are on the way in Portland aimed at eradicating mosquito breeding sites in the fight against the Zika Virus.
North Coast times visited three schools this morning to check on clean up day activities.
A work crew from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) arrived at the Port Antonio Primary school shortly after 9 am to assist in the school’s clean up day activities.
Simon Jackson head of the JPS work crew said; “We are here today to remove debris that may cause mosquito breeding sites and by extension trim two trees that hold water where mosquitoes can breed.’
Sonia McAnuff Seaton, bursar of the Port Antonio High School said, “what we are doing here today is a combination of cleanup activities, our school is clean but there are some debris that has build up in drains. ”
Acting principal of the Norwich Primary School Nicki-Ann Vassell said, members of the school’s environment club will focus on the dump site to remove styrofoam and plastic containers. “It’s very important because as we know the mosquitoes that cause the virus breed in several containers.”
