Charged with manslaughter in death of Ochi man
A popular dancer of Ocho Rios St Ann has been slapped with charges in connection to a motor vehicle crash along the Ocho Rios Bypass which left one man dead.
Christopher Newman, popularly known as “Tamba”, emcee and dancer, has appeared in court on a charge of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. It is alleged that Newman was driving a Nissan motorcar along the bypass when he hit and killed 56-year-old Carlton Gilbert of Carib Heights, Ocho Rios, St Ann.
Reports are that shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, Newman was driving a Nissan motorcar towards St Mary from the Ocho Rios Town Centre when he reportedly hit a goat. Newman reportedly lost control of the vehicle which mounted the side-walk and hit Gilbert sending him flying for several meters, landing some distance away from where he was hit. Gilbert was taken to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Reports are that Newman was coming from a dance in the early morning and several allegations were made by people quick on the scene from the settlement along the bypass road.
Newman was arrested and taken into custody where he was charged for manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. When he appeared in the St Ann Resident Magistrate court last week, he was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 with one of two sureties.
