Police get some support for action against street vending, congestion.

The Councillor for the Ocho Rios Division in the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) Michael Belnavis is again calling for a consistent and serious effort by the Municipal Corporation to clear the sidewalks and streets of vendors in the resort town of Ocho Rios.
He made the call while he and a few other councillors commended the acting head of St Ann police, Acting Senior Superintendent of Police David White for efforts by the police to clear streets of major towns of illegal vendors. The police said the illegal vending was preventing them in their crime reduction strategies and called on the SAMC to take enforcement action.
Mr Belnavis who months ago called for the Council to take action against an increasing number of street vendors in Ocho Rios said the action had to be followed up. He said he noticed that even after action was taken in the morning by the afternoon vendors had retaken positions on the streets.

Councillor Lambert Weir of the Claremont Division said illegal street vending was also a problem in that town.
And Councillor Dallas Dickenson asked the police to deal with congestions infront of the police station in St Ann’s Bay and at Priory. The Chairman of the Council, Mayor Sydney Stewart made no comment about the police report on the street vending or any likely action by the police.
