Following a murder at the popular Little Dunn’s River at the weekend police are asking people to keep away from what they see is a site under criminal control. They warn that people patronising or visiting the site could become victims of gang reprisal violence.
Police say things were getting out of hand and criminals were controlling activity for their own gain at Little Dunn’s River Beach in Ocho Rios, St Ann before police raided the beach facility Monday, August 29.
Several police officers from the St Ann Police Operational Team carried out the Operations that were spurred by a murder at the beach Saturday evening.
Dead is 25-year-old Roshane Hansen, o/c Bredda of Mansfield Heights, or Falklands, Ocho Rios and also of Guys Hill, St Catherine.
The beach, across the road from Mystic Mountain is owned by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC). It is supposed to be free to the public, but is in fact informally operated by several people who charge money for entrance and to take people to the best spots over dangerous mini falls and rock outcrops.
Hansen has been at the beach for years working as an informal guide. Police believe he was killed by men from Steer Town who use the proceeds from the beach to fund their own criminal and gang activities.
Acting head of the St Ann police, Superintendent David White said police are still searching for men who escaped their dragnet Monday. Several others were held and are being processed.
Police say several permanent block and steel structures were being erected at the property without any authorization and compliance efforts by the St Ann Municipal Council and the UDC.
