Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other government ministers and MPs for St James toured several sections of St James badly affected by recent violence that has pushed the death toll in the parish to near 200 since the start of the year.
Mr Holness was accompanied on the tour Sunday, September 25, by commissioner of police Carl Williams, attorney general and MP for North Central St James Marlene Malahoo Forte, Horace Chang and Heroy Clarke as well as several JLP Councillors and caretakers. No member of the Opposition PNP was seen on the tour.
The tour in the early afternoon, took them to Gloucester Avenue, Norwood, Flanker, Salt Spring and Mount Salem. The prime minister’s team met with some victims of the violence and he later announced the setting up of a coast guard post to help stop the flow of guns into the western parishes. The government has also called out the army reserves, and there is, on the streets of the western city, more security officers. However, that did not prevent shootings in Montego Bay and Anchovy at the weekend.
