ST ANN SENIOR KEEPS DOING IT FOR HER DECEASED SON
BROWN’S TOWN, St Ann; Dec. 12, 2024
Treats are plentiful this time of year. They are targeted, usually, at children, the elderly or vulnerable, and special groups. Politicians, church leaders, businesses, entertainers, and would-be celebrities host them.
(Veletia Moodie keeps holding the treats)
Veleita Moodie is none of those. Yet, next week when she puts on her annual treat it will be the twenty-seventh (27th) that she has been hosting. She used to host them with her son Clifton White who died in 2015. After Clifton’s death, Ms Moodie determined to keep doing them in his memory and because the community appreciates the treats.
That community is Summerhill, Benin near Brown’s Town, St Ann.
For some companies and people who put on treats, funding is a breeze; often there is a budget that takes care of all the goodies.
Not so for Ms Moodie. She has been finding ingenious ways to pay for the treats. She even used to buy empties (drink and beer glass bottles) and then sell them with a $5 profit on each to help make up the money. Her daughters pitch in too but her primary source she says is God. Sometimes, she says, as December and the treat date draws near, she never knows where the money is coming from but it comes. Then there are kind people around like Paul Harding who is doing the catering and adding a few complementary plates.
She has already put out invitation to the children at the basic school in her community, to the Brown’s Town Seventh Day Adventist Church where she is a member and to the community at large. And she continues to make it special, staging it at her house in the community.
(Bottles like these formed a part of the funding)
Ms Moodie’s treat is on Thursday, December 19 in Summerhill.
