INADEQUATE DRAINAGE CAUSES GRIEF TO PEDESTRIANS, MOTORISTS

The streets in Ocho Rios, St Ann, were flooded today, Tuesday, April 15, making it very difficult for pedestrians as well as motorists to get around the tourist town.
Long spells of rainfall throughout the morning and afternoon left streets flooded, stalling vehicles and leaving some parked vehicles unable to move.

Heavy streams of water swept down Milford Road, past Ocho Rios High School, having jumped from the inadequate drains, cutting off use at one stage.
For long periods of the day parts of the streets in the small resort town were flooded preventing pedestrians from using them. These included Main Street, Newlin Street, and Graham Street.
Business people on Evelyn Street and on Island Village Plaza old North Coast Times that the flooding was occurring frequently now, even without heavy rains.
People had to jump from sections of the roadway to try to get onto sidewalks or walk long distances to cross the road, as the drains were flooded in several parts. High sidewalks in the downtown section of Main Street made it also difficult for pedestrians.
The drainage around Ocho Rios has not been rehabilitated or expanded for years resulting in flooding during heavy rains.
