OCHI GETS ‘REGGAE WALL’

Mural in Ochi Celebrating St Ann Artistes — from Marley to Virgo

OCHO RIOS, St Ann; July 29, 2025

There is a fresh look to a wall in one of Ocho Rios’ most popular plazas, Eight Rivers, celebrating six St Ann musicians. A mural was unveiled there on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at what is now being called the Reggae Wall.

The unveiling of the mural by the St Ann Chamber of Commerce took place Tuesday at midday, showing the faces of the six — Bob Marley, Shabba Ranks, Busy Signal, Romain Virgo, Burning Spear, and Ernie Smith.

The mural was painted by Jermaine Davis, aka “Mr Wonderful,” who lives in St Mary but works all over. The 24 ftx4 ft mural took two week to complete.

Even before the mural was unveiled, people responded on the North Coast Times Facebook page to a story of the then-upcoming event, questioning why others were not included and why there was no female artist there.

In making the opening remarks at the unveiling, Chamber President Dr Ransford Davidson said the mural was a symbol of pride and a lasting tribute to the messages that continue to shape Jamaica’s cultural identity. However, he said it was more than a tribute but a purposeful step in the Chamber’s mission to beautify Ocho Rios and to promote environmental sustainability. He said the St Ann Chamber wanted to help create pleasing, inspiring spaces for residents and visitors alike.

Youth President of the Chamber Greg-Ann Johnson, spoke about how music was interwoven in the culture of St Ann.  She said St. Ann wasn’t just another parish. “It’s the cradle of Jamaican culture. It’s the birthplace of reggae royalty. For us, Jamaica’s youth, reggae isn’t just music; it’s our history, our voice, our present, and our future.”

She said further: “From the hills of Nine Mile to the streets of Ocho Rios, music is St. Ann’s heartbeat. We dance to reggae in our streets, recite lyrics like poetry, and live the messages of unity in Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’ and pride in Burning Spear’s l ‘Identity’.”

One of the artistes featured, Romain Virgo said he was proud and honoured to be part of the Wall.

Greetings and comments also came from MP for North East St Ann, Matthew Samuda, and Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis.
