The Noranda Community Council has launched their “GET START” programme for 2014 to help stimulate businesses. The launch, took place at Noranda Sports Club in Discovery Bay, in St. Ann, on Wednesday, February 12.This is the third edition of the programme which aims to help people in the communities near to Noranda get their business going. The programme provides funds and other assistance to help people own their own businessesCommunity Relations Superintendent of Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners, Kent Skyers was the emcee for the programme launch.Get Start 2014 was officially launched by the President of Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners, Pansy Johnson, who greeted and thanked all the sponsors and supporters of the programme.

Mrs Johnson stated that the Get Start Programme, “is a partnership between Noranda Jamaica and the Noranda Community”. She said the Get Start Programme aims to encourage income and employment which will generate opportunities on a sustainable basis. It will enhance the ability of community residents to develop sustainable economic projects independent of, or in, partnership with, Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners.It was stated by Mr. Skyers that “the Noranda Get Start Program created business oppertunities for community members of Farm Town, Old Folly and other adjoining communities of Discovery Bay”. Councillor Arthur Clementson brought greeting and shared some of his experience with youths of his community.Lenford Lynch, a brick maker, is one of those who is singing praise about the programme. “Since I became a part of this programme, I have been able to hire individuals to work for me.” He is one of the successful entrepreneurs who was also awarded by Noranda.Susan Lamont whose vending business was assisted by the “Get Start” programme said her business has been growing: The community of Old Folly was awarded the Jamaica Nation Award for the Most Enhanced Community. In strengthening the programme, Noranda has invited the participation of various institutions that have skills and resources that could assist the beneficiaries of the “Get Start Program.” Sponsors and their representatives attending were: RADA, Vaughn Barnaby; SDC, Richardo Aiken, parish manager; and JNBS , Ranford Davidson manager of the Ocho Rios Branch.The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Lynch.
