Fifty-two years as an educator is worthy of recognition. Mildred Taylor, retired teacher and principal for the Newstead Basic School has been awarded by the St Mary Parish Council for outstanding service to the teaching profession. Seeing the need for an early childhood institution, she started to teach children from the confines of her home and as the numbers grew, she moved to the community centre and then the Methodist Church Hall.In the district of Cascade, St. Mary where Mrs. Taylor grew up, she was once called the ‘Community Secretary’ as she was the one who did letter writing and the filling out of documents for the elderly. As an ardent member of the Newstead Methodist Church, she is a part of the choir and is also a class leader. She was also the Women’s League President at the church.Before she entered the teaching profession, Mrs Taylor operated a shop and bar in Three Hills, St. Mary. She retired in September of this year at 78 years old.
