Police Encourage Residents to Report Cases to Health Professionals

While major crimes, including murder, have declined in St Mary, the police are reporting an increase in incidents involving people with mental health challenges.
Assistant Superintendent Adrian Quest told a town hall meeting in Port Maria that the police division is working closely with the Ministry of Health and Wellness to manage these cases better.

The St Mary Municipal Corporation hosted the town hall on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the Civic Centre in Port Maria.
“We have seen a decrease in major crimes but an increase in mental health-related calls,” ASP Quest said. He did not give data.
He noted that family members have been more willing to report loved ones who are struggling and commended them for seeking help.
“We want to encourage people, if you see that your family member is having some challenges, to reach out to the health professionals. Let the professionals handle it,” Quest stated.
He added that police officers are being trained to respond with more care and understanding when dealing with mental health incidents and that the partnership with health authorities is aimed at ensuring people get the treatment they need instead of ending up in the criminal justice system.
