Men seen torturing fellow inmate in Ochi lock-up charged
Five men who were seen in a viral video assaulting another man who was, like them, in lock-up at the Ocho Rios police station have been charged.
The five have been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and unlawful wounding. They are: thirty-three-year-old Dejaro Taylor, otherwise called ‘Dusso’ of Steer Town; thirty-two-year-old Dale Douglas, of Colegate and twenty-year-old Tajar Lynch of Runaway Bay, all of St. Ann
Also charged are: twenty-three-year-old Richard Jackson, of Hart Street, Kingston, and twenty-one-year-old Theoni Flemings, of Islington, St. Mary
Reports are that between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 19 an argument developed among the men when the inmate was assaulted. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and is back in the custody of the police.
A video that emerged at the weekend showed several men in the lock-up swearing and verbally abusing the other inmate before they started to throw a substance believed to be gasoline on the man. They then lit a fire and tried to set the other inmate alight. Some of them kicked and stomped on him.
Questions are being asked about how all that action could have taken place in the lockup without being detected by police.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is investigating.
Here is a small portion of the video. Be warned, you may find the images disturbing
