Men found guilty on gun and assault charges escape prison time

objectionTwo St Mary men are breathing sighs of relief after a high court judge decided against sending them to prison on Friday, December 9.

The men, who were found guilty on gun and assault charges on Wednesday, November 23, were both given a sentence of three years imprisonment suspended for three years.

Those convicted were Rossanie Johnson and Alex Atkinson.

Both men were charged with illegal possession of a firearm and assault at common law.

Allegations are that on October 25, 2015, at about 8:15 p.m., an argument developed among  Johnson, Atkinson and another man in the Capture Land community, Highgate in the parish.

One of the men later brandished an illegal firearm. Atkinson then passed the gun on to Johnson, and Johnson in turn uttered threatening words to the male complainant.

The male feared for his life and made a report to the police and the accused men were later arrested and charged.

The trial commenced on Tuesday, November 22 and last Wednesday, Mr Justice Stamp found the men guilty of the offences.

Johnson and Atkinson were taken into custody following being found guilty.

The sentences were to be handed down last Thursday, but were pushed back to Friday.

Johnson and Atkinson will not spend time in custody, but if they commit any offence during the three year period, then they will spend three years in prison.

The sentences were handed down by High Court Judge Chester Stamp.
