A man who tried to illegally obtain a passport pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before parish judge Andrea Thomas, in the St Ann’s Bay Parish Court on Thursday February 2.
He is 37-years-old Delroy Grant.
Allegations are that on February 16, 2015, Grant made false declaration to the Immigration to obtain a false passport in the name of Morgan Davey.
Grant pleaded guilty to the charge laid on him.
Reports state that the identification documents which were presented were also forged.
Grant’s gestures in court suggested that he was carefree as it regards the proceedings. He was warned by Judge Thomas that the fact that he was being “very nonchalant about the situation” could be enough to send him to prison.
The declaration regarding his identity was endorsed by a justice of the peace (JP).
When Judge Thomas questioned the investigating officer about ongoing investigations with the JP, the officer told the court he has not yet done that.
Judge Thomas urged the officer to make the necessary checks as in most of these instances, “there are reasons they want to travel in another name” and that the JP would have also made a false declaration and would need to answer to the allegations.
It was later revealed by Grant that he has a passport bearing his correct identification that he has travelled using that passport. He claims he has travelled to two Caribbean countries and confessed he was convicted for drugs in one of these countries in the early 2000s and was deported after overstaying.
He was taken into custody on Thursday and remanded, as a means of not interfering with the investigation. He is set to return to court on February 24.
