A man, who admitted to stealing a number of items from another man’s shop, compensated the complainant for the items and was, in addition, fined $10,000.
Alrick Scott was the man charged for simple larceny.
He appeared before senior resident magistrate Andrea Thomas in the St. Ann’s Bay Magistrate Court on Thursday, April 7.
It is alleged that on the day in question the man stole some items from the complainant’s shop the day before he was caught. With the help of residents, Scott was captured after they deliberately placed items out for him to steal.
Although Scott said he was “guilty with explanation”, he told the magistrate that he did not take all the items they had been accusing him of taking.
Scott, in his defense, said he stole a knife, tin of baked beans, roll-ons and other items.
The total value of the items stolen was $5,950.
“Sir, pay $6, 000,” explained RM Thomas to Scott.
Scott, who did not have the money on him at the time, told the magistrate that he needed some time to retrieve the money and return. She allowed him to do so as the complainant was leaving for overseas in the afternoon.
When the matter reappeared before the courts, Scott paid the man the money for his items.
However, RM Thomas told Scott he would have to pay a fine of $10,000 or 30 days.
He was taken to the holding area until the fine was paid.
