A man implicated in the theft of a Nissan Tiida motor car was granted bail after his antecedent report showed that he had no previous convictions.
The accused man, Chevis Miller, who is an auto-electrician, was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 by parish judge Tricia Hutchinson, when he appeared before the St Mary Parish Court on Thursday, August 31.
Miller was, on August 24, remanded for his records and the arresting officer’s statement.
Allegations are that on July 24 at about 9:30 a.m., the complainant secured his grey Nissan Tiida motorcar. However, when he went to check on the vehicle at about 7:40 a.m. the following day, the vehicle was missing. The complainant then made a report to the police about the missing vehicle.
Further reports are that on August 17, the accused man was found in the motor vehicle in the Buff Bay, Portland. A statement from the arresting officer said that Miller was found sleeping in the vehicle and had indicated to the police that he had got the vehicle from some men to do some work on it.
In a successful bail application, Miller’s attorney Carl McDonald indicated to the court that his client had been doing some electrical work on the vehicle. McDonald said that he was not contesting that his client was found sleeping in the vehicle as he was tired after “a hard day’s work.”
McDonald highlighted that his client was arrested and he had no previous convictions. His records also indicated this fact. The attorney also revealed the defence was trying to assist the police in finding those who brought the car to Miller.
In addition to his bail of $250,000 being granted, Miller is to report to the Buff Bay Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The case will again be mentioned on September 14.
