Cop Was Hurt In Incident, Man Shot
Following a controversial incident between a motorist and a policeman in Port Maria, St Mary, a man has been charged with multiple offences.
Police identify him as fifty-one-year-old Owen Geddes, a taxi operator of Three Hills district, St. Mary. He was charged with attempted murder, assault occasioning bodily harm, malicious destruction of property and injury shooting.
In the incident on Friday, September 1, a policeman was injured after he was reportedly held and dragged by the motorist who reportedly refused to follow a police order and stop. Following this, the driver was shot by the police.
According to a police release, about 11:43 a.m., (September 1) “lawmen were on traffic duty in the area and spotted a motor vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner. The vehicle was signalled to stop, but the driver ignored it and collided with two police officers. He reportedly grabbed one of the officers’ hands and dragged him several metres along the roadway.
“The officer, who was pinned to the vehicle, used his firearm to hit Geddes to his upper body causing Geddes to release him before speeding off.
“The officer was transported to the hospital, where Geddes was also seen. They were treated and released. Geddes was subsequently arrested and charged.”
Following the incident, several people including motorists blocked Stennett Street the main road into the town. At several points along the roadway, debris was set afire as part of the protest.
A court date for Geddes is being finalised.
