MAJOR CHANGES IN AREA 2 POLICE

Several changes have been made to the ranks of the senior corps of the police in Area 2, covering St Ann, St Mary and Portland. At the top of the leadership, the head of the Area 2, ACP Ealan Powell is leaving, returning to Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in Kingston. Mr Powell confirmed Friday to The Times that the effective date of the transfer is January 15. Mr Powell made the announcement Friday, January 2, the same day he launched the inaugural Area 2 high schools debating competition. Three schools that have already won parish debating competitions will vie for the title and prizes. At the function ACP Powell was described by Superintendent Dudley Scott as a “dreamer and visionary” who supported several causes.

Superintendent Dean Johnson, who was head of St Mary police has been transferred and Superintendent Dwight Powell, from Area 2 is acting in his place. The post is expected to be filled in two weeks by Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay-Clarke who is to become the first woman to lead the division. Back in the area, too, is Superintendent Egbert Parkins, who had gone to head up operations in St James. He is in charge of operations at Area 2. Superintendent Steve Brown, will leave the police Corporate Communications Unit, CCU for St Ann where he will be second in command to SSP Yvonne Martin Daley. Deputy Supt Troyville Haughton in charge of the high profile Ocho Rios division remains. There had been some disquiet when reports surfaced two months ago that he would be transferred.

There had already been other shifts within the parishes including the transfer of DSP Jervis Moore, in charge of crime in Area 2, to Area 1. He has been replaced by DSP Paul Thomas.
