MOM, SELF-DISCIPLINE AND BEING FOCUSSED — FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS
Twelve-year-old Kalana Dawkins is overwhelmed with happiness as she walks away with the title of being the top girl at Albion Mountain Primary School, St Mary, in the 2024 Primary Exit Profile (PEP) Examination.
Dawkins who gained 80 percent and over in all four core subjects in PEP said her secret to success was self-discipline, being focused and most importantly having her mother as her mentor.
She said her mother helped her maintain a strict studying habit throughout her primary school career. “My mother helped me a lot with my studies and our teachers at the school are patient, and extra lesson classes helped,” Kalana said.
Dawkins will be attending her first choice, Westwood High, Trelawny, in September.

ALBION MOUNTAIN PRIMARY AND INFANT GRADUATION
(Valedictorians Kalana Dawkins(l) ánd Denique McKoy).
She received prizes for outstanding attendance, being the most disciplined, and having the most outstanding performances in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies in PEP.
Dawkins, having gained a mark of 80 in her PEP Mathematics exams, explained that Mathematics was her weakest subject. “I was surprised at my mark for Mathematics as I just don’t like the subject but I kept practicing it.” Dawkins hopes to work on overcoming fear of the subject as she looks to enter high school. “I will have to put in extra work for that,” she said.
This St Mary ‘bright spark’ is not about always studying. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and listening to music. Dawkins, who dreams of becoming an author, advises her peers to be focused, and disciplined towards their studies and to seek help with their weak areas. ”Once you are disciplined and focused you can achieve your goals,” she said.
