Hotel workers get hands dirty collecting plastic bottles from roadsideJewel Dunn’s River Resort and Spa Team is on a drive to collect plastic bottles between Runaway Bay and Tower Isles in an effort to aid in the preservation of the environment. This effort started on Monday June 1, 2015 and in the first four days of the campaign (to Thursday June 4, 2015) the group collectively gathered over 70,000 bottles. Sales manager at Jewel Dunn’s River Resort and Spa, Sharleen Senior explained to North Coast Times that under the leadership of project leaders John Miles, hotel manager and Alicia Mullings, environmental manager, the team of the hotel has decided to get into the competitive spirit by challenging departments in the hotel to compete against each other. The staff and managers are divided into 12 groups and each day a count is done in the back of the hotel to determine the winner of the largest collection of bottles. Some of the departments involved in the bottle drive include weddings, sales and gift shop, accounts, dining room and kitchen.Ms Senior further explained that the hotel saw the need to contribute to clean up the environment, especially the Ocho Rios area and rid the area of bottles. “It is safe to say you may not find any bottles between Runaway Bay and Tower Isles,” now that the project is underway, she explained. In addition, she said that the support for the bottle drive is tremendous as persons not employed in the hotel are lending their support to the drive. The Jewel Dunn’s River and Spa team is encouraging persons and other hotels to get involved in their own bottle drive to help in cleaning the environment. The recycled bottles collected will be delivered to the Plastic Bottle Collection Depot in Trinity in Port Maria, St. Mary. The bottle drive is expected to continue until the end of June.
