Jamaica’s international airports remain closed today, following damage to critical radar at Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) Friday.
The Airport Authority in a statement this morning said Jamaica’s airspace remains closed until 6:59 this evening (Saturday).
A statement from NMIA said operators continue to “monitor the situation in which the Air Traffic Services at the Kingston Air Traffic Control Centre (KATCC) of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) suffered damage to its radar and communication networks as a result of a lightning strike incident which occurred during inclement weather on Friday, September 8, 2017.”
Based on an update provided by the JCAA, the closure of the airspace is being extended until 6:59 p.m.and as such, all flights have either been cancelled or delayed.
Although NMIA remains open, passengers and well-wishers are being advised to contact the relevant travel agent or airline’s customer care number before travelling to the airport and for rebooking options.
Reports are that some flights are boarding at delayed time but normality with flights is not expected Saturday.
