A stunning story of alleged trickery has been unraveling in court with accusations that a Jamaican woman led on a much older American man made him spend more than a million dollars on their relationship and when he came to Jamaica she refused intimacy. The man went to the police after the woman went away for more than a week with a car he had bought for her for nearly $1.7 million dollars and when the police got involved the woman’s boyfriend brought in the car.The man from California in the US reportedly met the woman, Kimonet Johnson, on a dating website and he claimed the woman promised to have a relationship with him which would eventually lead to marriage. According to information which came out in court last Thursday, January 15, the complainant and the Johnson started an online relationship after they met online in July 2014. They would correspond by email, Skype and by telephone. The woman reportedly told the man she wanted to have a relationship with him and would profess her love for him.The court heard that the woman received numerous gifts from the complainant including money to purchase a car, tablet computer, iPhone and call credit for her cell phone.

VISIT

Arrangements were reportedly made for the complainant to visit Jamaica in November 2014, after a suggestion was made in one of their conversations in October, to meet in person. As part of the November visit, arrangements were reportedly made for the accused woman to rent a motor vehicle. The court heard, however, that the complainant instead sent money to purchase a car. US$15,000 (J$1.7 M) was reportedly sent for the purchase after pictures of a car and the value was told to the complainant by the accused. The money was reportedly wired directly to the car sales offices. Monies were also sent to deal with other issues including insurance and licence.

FAMILY

The accused reportedly picked up her would be lover in the car at the airport in Montego Bay and he was introduced to relatives there. The court heard that the couple stopped at Mega Mart in Montego Bay where purchases amounting to US$585 (more than J$60,000) were made at that store. The two later travelled to Ocho Rios where several things including doctor’s visits and joint accounts were done as part of the relationship. Further, the court was told that Johnson and the American had arguments after the accused failed to become intimate with him. The American is much older that Johnson. The woman reportedly told the man that ‘she is not ready’ and a pillow was reportedly placed between them in bed.

ANOTHER ARRESTED

The court heard also that on one occasion the woman told the complainant that they car had been impounded because it had not been licensed. The complainant reportedly paid over $38,000 to have the vehicle released. The court heard that the receipt given to the complainant for the release of the vehicle was fictitious. The man who reportedly produced the receipt to the complainant has also been charged by the police.  He is Gavin Shelly. Further, the court was told that the accused disappeared with the car for over a week. The complainant reportedly tried to reach the woman without success. After numerous attempts he reported the matter to the police. When the police made contact with the woman and request was made for the car to be turned over, a man reported to be the accused woman’s boyfriend turned in the car to the police. The accused reportedly told police that she didn’t return to the man because of fear. She alleged that the man threatened to kill her. The American told police that the woman tricked him into believing that they would have had a relationship. RM Andrea Thomas made several enquiries of the investigating officer about his probe which gave rise to the charge against the accused persons. The RM said the investigation into the case is inadequate and incomplete. The case is to return to court on February 5. The accused persons had their bail extended.
