The new toll rates on the North-South Highway, linking Linstead and Moneague came into effect on Friday, September 11. The application for the rate increase was recently approved by the Transport Ministry on Tuesday, August 11. This increase comes just one year after the highway leg was opened last year August. This leg serves as a gateway that connects St. Ann and the rest of the coast with areas such as Linstead, Spanish Town and the capital cit.
The Jamaica North-South Highway Company says the rise in the toll rates for the Linstead to Moneague leg (also called MountRosser By-pass) of the highway is due to a significant increase in maintenance costs. The rates came in effect at midnight on Friday, September 11. This has left motorists using that leg of the highway paying as much as 80 percent increase in the rates at the Mount Rosser Toll Plaza. The new rates are:
- Class one vehicles, such as cars and small SUVs, now pay $360 up from $200. This reflects an 80 percent increase.
- Class two vehicles, pick ups and larger SUVs have gone up from $420 to $715; a 70 percent increase.
- Vehicles that are categorized under class three, such as trucks and trailers have moved from $1000 to $1,075.
- Class four vehicles, such as motorbikes that use the highway, will have to pay $10 more as the fee has increased to $180.
However, the Jamaica North-South Highway Company is having a special promotion rate and people are being encouraged to post suggested toll fares on its social media site. This was revealed through an advertisement released by the company.
