In three ceremonies at secondary high schools in St Ann recently, ten students were awarded book vouchers, IGL books and pencils and one presented with a scholarship by Sean Johnson of IGL Ltd, Trade Development Representative for St Ann.This as IGL extended its support to top performing students, in need of assistance, in St Ann.
The presentations were made at school devotional exercises or general assemblies at York Castle High and Ocho Rios High on Friday, October 31, and at Steer Town Academy on Wednesday, November 5.
All but one student were hand-picked by teachers at their respective schools. On Friday October 31, 2014 one student of York Castle High, Andre Williams a past student of St Ann’s Bay Primary, was chosen by IGL Limited to receive awards consisting of a book voucher valued at $5,000, a scholarship of one year’s free tuition and one year’s supply of free IGL Gas. Mr. Johnson said: “the reason Andre Williams was chosen is because of his success in his GSAT exams” Andre Williams GSAT grades ranged between 90 per cent and 100 per cent.
Three students of four selected from Ocho Rios High School received their awards at their midday devotion, also on Friday, October 31, with book vouchers worth $5,000, IGL notebooks and pencils. On Wednesday, November 5, four selected of five from Steer Town Academy were also presented with book vouchers worth $5,000 each and IGL notebooks and pencils.
Students selected to receive benefits from IGL but who were absent were Kevon Daye of Ocho Rios High, and Josh Foster of Steer Town Academy.
Mr. Johnson said “IGL presents the ten (10) awards as a way to assist the less fortunate but very hardworking students and all book vouchers that were not presented to students were left at the school to be presented to students by school representatives.” He also said “IGL has been awarding students since its existence. IGL has adopted the Riverton Basic School in Kingston and we currently give scholarships to some UWI medical students yearly and we will continue the Book Voucher Programme as long as we see fit.”
