Two people from the capital city were killed in a horrific crash on the Prospect main road in St. Mary on Saturday evening, March 29.They have been identified as Caswell Baylis, 45, of Donhead Avenue in St Andrew and 35-year-old Marsha Singh of Honeyhill Close, also in St. Andrew. The accident left many wondering about the speed at which the gray Toyota Corolla motorcar was travelling toward Ocho Rios from St Mary. The crash took place at the intersection of the Prospect Main Road (North Coast Highway) and the road to Country Club/ Three Hills. About 9:25, the silver coloured car left the road, smashed down the heavy metal road barrier, and ended up trapped in the 4-foot wide drain. The left hand side of the car was ripped off, and a piece of the grooved metal barrier, about six feet long rammed through the windscreen and was left hoisted on the back rest.Though the crash activated the air bag, Baylis and Singh were badly damaged and were trapped between the re-located dash board and the mangled body of the car.The two received multiple injuries, and had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters from the Oho Rios Rios Fire Station. That took more than half an hour, with many people who had gathered on the scene, offering advice about how to release the two and others complaining that the response of the emergency services was too slow.Ms Singh was the first to be removed from the wreckage and first aid was applied in attempt to revive her. She was taken away to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital where she died. About five minutes after Ms Singh had been sent off, a lifeless, smashed up Baylis was taken out of the car and put on a stretcher on the side of the road. He was pronounced dead at hospital.Traffic piled up for more than a mile toward Ocho Rios and also in the opposite direction, toward Tower Isle. ACP for Area 2, Elan Powell and several senior officers were on the scene. The scene was processed by personnel from the Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Unit.
