Thanks and praise were the order of the day at a service to mark the 85th anniversary of Hoolebury Infant and Primary School, near Salem, St Ann, on Sunday, January 15.
Among those to whom thanks and congratulations were extended were: former principals, acting principals and vice principals, board chairmen, former students who taught at the school, PTA presidents, current staff including teachers and administrative and ancillary workers.
Board chairman Delhalon Minto, also a past student, was among several persons honoured for their involvement with the school. Desland Pennant, past principal drew loud cheers as he was recognized with a plaque. He said thanks on behalf of the awardees.
The celebration of 85 years of learning and transformation of lives took the form of a service at the Hoolebury Methodist Church. Even though there were some differences in the recalled history, it was acknowledged that the school grew out of, and still has a good relationship with, the church.
A graduate of the school, Keron Morris, attorney and communications specialist, was guest speaker. Mr Morris took time out to thank all those who influenced his life while he was a student and told present students they could accomplish much by focus and hard work.
Another past student is principal Leon Lamont. He said he never dreamt he would one day become principal and gave anecdotes of his years at Hoolebury. Mr Lamont gave a history of the school and praised and thanked the many who had contributed to it. He spoke about the school’s achievements, growth and programmes for the students.
Bringing greetings were: MP for Northwest St Ann, in which the school falls, Dr Dayton Campbell and councillor Winston Lawrence. Pat Thompson who has served the school in several capacities brought greetings on behalf of the Hoolebury Methodist Church. The board chairman also brought greetings.
A group of students, the Culture Club delighted with a dance of praise. Devotion was done by Andrea Gordon, senior teacher.
Chairing the programme was Rosea Pyne-Gallimore, principal of Waltham Abbey Primary School. Vote of thanks was done by Hector Duhaney.
