The man accused of chopping to death his ex-lover and one of her sons begged for his life as a mob dragged him from under a house, beat and chopped him to death.
‘A fooli’ness mi do…Nuh kill mi!’ was the cry, according to one of those in the group that searched for and then found Orville Scarlett, otherwise called Bull.
Forty-two year-old Scarlett of Watt Town, St Ann had been named as wanted in connection with the murder of 31-year-old Allesha Francis and her son Jahmarnie Jackson, both of Linton Park, a neighbouring district to Watt Town, in south St Ann.
In the attack allegedly committed by Scarlett on the family, on Tuesday night, August 28, another of Ms Francis’ sons suffered severe life changing injuries to the face and body. Her only daughter a six-year-old escaped without injury.
A romantic relationship between Francis and Scarlett ended over a year ago. It is not clear whether the termination of the relationship by Francis had anything to do with a court case between them over money.
LINTON PARK IN THE NEWS
Infamy came to Linton Park when events started to unfold on Tuesday night, August 28, with the attack on Francis and her three children.
It is reported they had all gone to a nearby shop and Francis had got supplies for lunch for the week as she was reporting to a job as a flag person.
Ms Francis and the children were just entering their yard when Scarlett attacked. Ms Francis was cut down and chopped all over and lay dead, part of her body on a rock at the entrance to her house. Jahmarnie was also killed and his body also lay in the yard.
The 12-year-old boy, now hospitalized who received a vicious chop to the face, ran and collapsed in a neighbour’s yard. His sister also ran to another house, escaping hurt.
Blood was everywhere when people started coming to the yard in the early morning, Wednesday, August 29. Scene of crime investigators on the night even missed a finger cut off and in the blood on the ground.
There was condemnation everywhere for Bull who was not well liked in the community. One woman from the community of Watt Town described him as “disagreeable” and “not liked”.
NO ‘JUNGLE JUSTICE’
Police led by Senior Superintendent Michael Smith and head of crime for St Ann, Deputy Superintendent Richard Hylton were on the scene early Wednesday and begged residents not to take the law into their own hands. The residents expressed the desire to kill Bull. SSP Smith also named Scarlett as wanted for the murder and asked him to turn himself in by mid-day Thursday.
Meantime people had started searching for Scarlett in the area. They armed themselves with machetes, stones and sticks as they searched the nearby fields, bushes and houses.
On Friday morning, about 1:30, August 31, while in the company of the police,a group of residents saw what appeared to be a figure under a raised house in Watt Town.
People crept up to ensure it was Scarlett. Someone shone a light to his face and then as he moved, shielding his face, he was grabbed by the arms and legs.
It’s not clear where the police were at this time.
However, people began to shout and to hit Scarlett as he tried to shield himself from the blows and the chops from machetes. He begged for mercy and reportedly confessed he had chopped to death the woman he once loved and also her son.
‘A fooli’ness mi do…Nuh kill mi!’ Do nuh kill me.”
Within minutes he was dead.
