The 29 were among 37 who landed at the beach in Boston, Portland, in a small boat, Monday, July 10. The other eight are children. They were said to be fleeing their country where gangs have taken control of the capital and the Government remains unstable.

A release from the police Tuesday evening said: “The 29 Haitian nationals charged with illegal entry were placed before the Portland Parish Court on Tuesday, July 18. Twenty-four men and five women were jointly fined after they appeared before the court. They were each fined J$7,000 or three days of hard labour.

The police release said: “Arrangements are being made by Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) to have them returned to Haiti. The Haitians arrived at Boston Beach in Portland on Monday, July 10 about 1:40 p.m. It is believed that they embarked on their journey from Jeremie, Haiti, approximately 14 days ago.”
