GOLDEN GROVE PRIMARY TOPS FOOTBALL, UPSET IN NETBALL

BETHANY, CHARLTON PRIMARY TOPS IN U-13 NETBALL

OCHO RIOS, St Ann; Feb.5 , 2026

Golden Grove Primary School continues to show dominance in some sports in St Ann, but this year, as it won the Under-13 football, its vaunted netball team got knocked off its perch and left the door open for Bethany Primary to place top.

Nearly twenty primary schools from the parish assembled at Buckfield playfield, Ocho Rios, St Ann on Friday, January 30, 2026, in the All-Island St Ann Parish Round of the INSPORTS Under-13 football and netball competitions.

In the football finals, Golden Grove swept away Ocho Rios Primary 2-0 to take first place and the cash prize of $50,000.

Adelle Facey and Joshua Folks hit the back of the net for Golden Grove. Speaking to the North Coast Times, Andray Richards, manager and coach who has helped make Golden Grove into a powerhouse in netball, praised his teams and the school’s support. He had special commendation for Justin Barrett, who was named the MVP of football, and Hushanae Williams, who was named the best female footballer. Each team was required to have at least one girl.

Parry Town Primary was awarded 3rd place.

Golden Grove went into the netball semi-finals as the overwhelming favourites, having won the competition eight years running. But this time they didn’t even place second. They were in third place after a victory over Watt Town 8-2. Coach Richards said there were some bad refereeing decisions, among other issues.

The proud winners were Bethany Primary, who beat Goden Grove and then whipped Charlton 7-2 in the finals.

Winning coach Tasheka Wallace told the North Coast Times that the team was overwhelmed by the victory. She said they had been picking up second and third place for the parish every year since 2023, when she started coaching. Amoynique Wray of Bethany took the MVP Trophy, and the school won $50,000 with the championship trophy.

Charlton Primary’s teacher-coach Danike Williams, was ecstatic with her team’s effort and second place. She said the girls were celebrated at school. Mrs Williams said theirs was a brilliant effort, starting with the girls knowing nothing about the sport when she assembled them last September.

The competitions under INSPORT direction ran from September to the finals on Friday, January 30. Because Hurricane Melissa disrupted school schedules and affected some schools and students, there will not be an all-island final in the two sports this year, involving winning parishes and zones.
