Ten additional garbage trucks have been sent to the North Eastern Region comprising Portland, St Mary, and St Ann. These trucks sent to the North Eastern Parks and Markets (NEPM) are part of the fleet of 50 received in Jamaica at the end of November.
Portland has received three of those 10 trucks, bringing to eight the number of garbage trucks available to the eastern parish.
Community Relations Manager for NSWMA, Ms. Biggs says that residents will see an improvement in the services. She said that she has received complaints about the garbage pile-up in several communities. Some communities say garbage has not been collected for up to three weeks.
Public Health Manager for Region 2, Patrick Marshall is optimistic that with the addition of the trucks the backlog should be quickly cleared.
It appears the backlog of the garbage is worse in east Portland. Communities such as Commodore, Wall Pen, and Long Bag are badly affected by the delayed collection of garbage.
