GANJA, HASHISH AND COCAINE SEIZED IN DISCOVERY BAY

Loaded ship raided at Port Rhodes

 Police seized several pounds of ganja and hashish in a raid aboard a ship docked in Discovery Bay, St Ann on Wednesday, July 16. The drugs had a value of $25 million dollars. No one was arrested. The Area Two Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND), the Discovery Bay Police along with coastguard personnel conducted the joint operation aboard the ship docked at Port Rhoades in Discovery Bay. According to a release from the police communication arm, CCU,: between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., a search of a vessel that was preparing to leave the island for Gramercy in the United States of America was carried out and the following seized:

  • One knapsack containing 35 parcels of hashish weighing approximately 35 pounds, which has an estimated street value of J$23,088,390, and
  • Three tarpaulins containing 36 parcels of compressed ganja weighing approximately 212 pounds with an estimated street value of just under one million Jamaican dollars

No one was arrested in relation to this seizure. Police have been conducting several interviews of locals and foreigners who were working on the vessel or at the port at the time. The vessel was loaded with bauxite. The Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of persons who might have been involved in the incident on the vessel to contact the Area Two-Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division at 975-4779, Police 119 emergency number or the nearest Police Station.

IN MONTEGO BAY

In another drug related incident, about 5:40 p.m., also on Wednesday, a woman was checking in to board a flight destined for Brussels, Holland at the Sangster’s International Airport when a suitcase she was checking in was searched and 12 packages wrapped in black material and transparent plastic bags containing cocaine were found hidden among items of clothing and other personal effects.The drug weighed 2.2 kilograms and is valued at approximately US$ 28,000 or just over J$3 M. She was arrested and charged by the Area One Police. Charged with Possession of Cocaine, Dealing in Cocaine and Attempting to Export Cocaine is Cheraw Vickayana Hastens Sadhoe, a Surinamese National and student residing in Amsterdam, Holland. She is scheduled to appear in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 22.
